Is ETF passive income?
One of my favorite vehicles for generating passive income is investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs). I own several income-focused ETFs, including the JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (NYSEMKT: JEPI). I routinely buy more shares of the ETF, which offers a lucrative monthly income stream.
Most, but not all, ETFs are passive. Similarly, mutual funds are often associated with active management, but passive mutual funds exist too.

- Bottom Line.
Passive income includes regular earnings from a source other than an employer or contractor. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) says passive income can come from two sources: rental property or a business in which one does not actively participate, such as being paid book royalties or stock dividends.
Investing in ETFs can be a smart way to generate income, as they can offer diversification, low costs, and high liquidity compared to other traditional investments. Want to generate income by investing in ETFs? This video explains different types of ETFs you can explore. Your browser can't play this video.
As the ETF market has evolved, different types of ETFs have been developed. They can be passively managed or actively managed. Passively managed ETFs attempt to closely track a benchmark (such as a broad stock market index, like the S&P 500), whereas actively managed ETFs intend to outperform a benchmark.
How are they managed? While they can be actively or passively managed by fund managers, most ETFs are passive investments pegged to the performance of a particular index. Mutual funds come in both active and indexed varieties, but most are actively managed.

Invest in Dividend Stocks
If you specifically want passive income, you might consider dividend stocks. Dividend stocks often pay quarterly, usually with a yield in the range of 2% to 5%. Stocks that pay dividends tend to be well-known, financially stable companies, so the risk is typically low compared to other stocks.

Is Airbnb considered passive income?
Airbnb's are considered to be passive income because the operations of running a vacation rental are passive. This is because running a lucrative Airbnb business isn't always hands-on. Technology and automation have made the vacation rental industry hands-off.
You can create passive income from dividends by investing directly in dividend stocks or by investing in dividend mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
By keeping assets in tax-deferred accounts like IRAs and 401(k) plans, you won't have to pay tax on your income and gains until you withdraw the money from the account. In the case of a Roth IRA, you may never have to pay tax on your distributions at all.
You can make money from ETFs by trading them. And some ETFs pay out the money the ETF makes to investors. These payments are called distributions.
ETFs are subject to market fluctuation and the risks of their underlying investments. ETFs are subject to management fees and other expenses. Unlike mutual funds, ETF shares are bought and sold at market price, which may be higher or lower than their NAV, and are not individually redeemed from the fund.
Symbol | Name | 5-Year Return |
---|---|---|
IUS | Invesco RAFI Strategic US ETF | 14.75% |
OEF | iShares S&P 100 ETF | 14.73% |
SPHB | Invesco S&P 500® High Beta ETF | 14.58% |
SPYG | SPDR Portfolio S&P 500 Growth ETF | 14.40% |
The primary objective of passive ETFs is to replicate the performance of a specific benchmark index or asset class without requiring active decision-making. Since there is no active manager trying to beat a benchmark, there is also often less of an administrative fee.
Most ETF income is generated by the fund's underlying holdings. Typically, that means dividends from stocks or interest (coupons) from bonds. Dividends: These are a portion of the company's earnings paid out in cash or shares to stockholders on a per-share basis, sometimes to attract investors to buy the stock.
For example, the most popular ETF is the S&P 500 “Spyder” ETF. Investors in this ETF make money when the S&P 500 rises, and lose when it falls. This is passive management, which avoids investing in only a limited number of stocks, bonds, or other securities within a market.
For instance, some ETFs may come with fees, others might stray from the value of the underlying asset, ETFs are not always optimized for taxes, and of course — like any investment — ETFs also come with risk.
Are ETFs good for passive investors?
Passive ETFs are funds that purchase shares listed on benchmark indexes. They are popular among investors because they offer exposure to entire sectors or segments that many smaller investors could not fully access or mimic on their own due to costs.
But if an investor can take on the risk, then owning individual stocks can mean much higher dividend yields. While you can pick the stock with the highest dividend yield, ETFs track a broader market, so the overall yield will average out to be lower.
