Description

This product contains three quizzes that align with the key concepts of the Force and Motion unit as part of Amplify Science. Quiz #1 is all multiple choice, Quiz #2 is a mixture of multiple choice and short answer, and Quiz #3 is only short answer.

This assessment is most aligned with the edited and revised version of the lesson PowerPoints on my TpT store as they are aligned with NYSED's performance expectations and disciplinary core ideas from the NGSS.

The key concepts included in this assessment bundle include:

  • When describing where an object is and how it's moving, the observer’s frame of reference must first be clearly stated.
  • Unbalanced forces cause objects to change velocity (e.g., start, stop, speed up, slow down, and change direction).
  • How an object changes velocity (e.g., speeds up, slows down, etc.) depends on the direction of the net force being exerted.
  • Objects always change velocity in the direction of the net (or total) force.
  • If the net force on a stationary object is zero, it will not move. If it is already moving, it will continue moving in the same direction at the same velocity.
  • A stronger force can cause a greater change in velocity and a weaker force causes a smaller change in velocity.
  • Understanding a cause-and-effect relationship can help you infer what led to a particular result.
  • If the same strength force is exerted on two objects but the objects have two different masses, the object with less mass will have a greater change in velocity.
  • The kinetic energy of a moving object increases proportionally (i.e., by the same amount) to its mass.
  • The kinetic energy of a moving object increases by the square (i.e., by an ever-increasing amount) of its velocity.
  • When two objects collide, a force is exerted on each object. The two forces are exerted in opposite directions, but they are the same strength.
  • In addition, the forces exerted on each object during a collision are always equal in strength, irrespective of each object’s mass or velocity.
  • When objects collide, the kinetic energy from each object is transferred to the other. This transfer of energy occurs by the two equal and opposite forces of the collision.
  • Even though the strength of the collision force exerted on colliding objects is always the same, objects with a higher mass undergo a smaller change in velocity while objects with less mass will undergo a greater change in velocity.

All assessments, handouts, unit wall cards, evidence cards, background cards, and any other materials in the "unit bins" with your school's purchase of Amplify are not included. You cannot use this resource without it.

NGSSMS-PS2-2

Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. Emphasis is on balanced (Newton’s First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newton’s Second Law), frame of reference, and specification of units. Assessment is limited to forces and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame, and to change in one variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.

NGSSMS-PS2-1

Apply Newton’s Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two colliding objects. Examples of practical problems could include the impact of collisions between two cars, between a car and stationary objects, and between a meteor and a space vehicle. Assessment is limited to vertical or horizontal interactions in one dimension.
