How much credit card debt is normal?
You want to maintain less than a 30 percent balance on each card and overall.
$5,000 in credit card debt can be quite costly in the long run. That's especially the case if you only make minimum payments each month. However, you don't have to accept decades of credit card debt. There are a few things you can do to pay your debt off faster - potentially saving thousands of dollars in the process.
Approximately 22% of Americans reported they now owe between $10,000 to $20,000 in credit card debt, and 5% have more than $30,000. "In today's economic landscape, the surge in credit card debt is a stark indication of the financial strain many Americans face," Debt.com Chairman Howard Dvorkin said in a statement.
While that certainly isn't a small amount of money, it's not as catastrophic as the amount of debt some people have. In fact, a $1,000 balance may not hurt your credit score all that much. And if you manage to pay it off quickly, you may not even accrue that much interest against it.
The average debt an American owes is $104,215 across mortgage loans, home equity lines of credit, auto loans, credit card debt, student loan debt, and other debts like personal loans. Data from Experian breaks down the average debt a consumer holds based on type, age, credit score, and state.
If your total balance is more than 30% of the total credit limit, you may be in too much debt. Some experts consider it best to keep credit utilization between 1% and 10%, while anything between 11% and 30% is typically considered good.
Running up $50,000 in credit card debt is not impossible. About two million Americans do it every year.
Having any credit card debt can be stressful, but $10,000 in credit card debt is a different level of stress. The average credit card interest rate is over 20%, so interest charges alone will take up a large chunk of your payments. On $10,000 in balances, you could end up paying over $2,000 per year in interest.
It will take 47 months to pay off $20,000 with payments of $600 per month, assuming the average credit card APR of around 18%. The time it takes to repay a balance depends on how often you make payments, how big your payments are and what the interest rate charged by the lender is.
Generation | Average credit card debt |
---|---|
Baby boomers (58–76) | $6,245 |
Generation X (42–57) | $8,134 |
Millennials (26–41) | $5,649 |
Generation Z (19–25) | $2,854 |
How many Americans are debt free?
Around 23% of Americans are debt free, according to the most recent data available from the Federal Reserve. That figure factors in every type of debt, from credit card balances and student loans to mortgages, car loans and more. The exact definition of debt free can vary, though, depending on whom you ask.
Average credit card debt
How much credit card debt does the average American have? The average balance is $6,501 as of the third quarter of 2023, according to Experian. That's a 10% increase from 2022 and the first time average credit card debt has exceeded $6,000 since 2019.
- Review and revise your budget. ...
- Make more than the minimum payment each month. ...
- Target one debt at a time. ...
- Consolidate credit card debt. ...
- Contact your credit card provider.
It's a good idea to pay off your credit card balance in full whenever you're able. Carrying a monthly credit card balance can cost you in interest and increase your credit utilization rate, which is one factor used to calculate your credit scores.
Most lenders say a DTI of 36% is acceptable, but they want to lend you money, so they're willing to cut some slack. Many financial advisors say a DTI higher than 35% means you have too much debt. Others stretch the boundaries up to the 49% mark.
A good goal is to be debt-free by retirement age, either 65 or earlier if you want. If you have other goals, such as taking a sabbatical or starting a business, you should make sure that your debt isn't going to hold you back.
On average, Americans carry around $5,733 in credit card debt, according to TransUnion's latest report. But when you break it down by age, most carry more than that.
What percentage of Americans are in debt? Just how many Americans are in debt? According to financial experts, the percentage of Americans in debt is around 80%. 8 in 10 Americans have some form of consumer debt, and the average debt in America is $38,000 not including mortgage debt.
Keeping a zero balance is a sign that you're being responsible with the credit extended to you. As long as you keep utilization low and continue on-time payments with a zero balance, there's a good chance you'll see your credit score rise, as well.
The Bottom Line
Personal loans have relatively lower interest rates than credit cards, but they must be repaid over a set period of time. Credit cards provide ongoing access to funds and you only pay interest on outstanding balances.
Can you have credit card debt and still have good credit?
People who have good credit scores and a lot of debt are likely in that boat because they have a good mix of loans and credit products — not just a high dollar amount. And of course, they make all of their payments on time.
The minimum payment mindset
Here's how most people get trapped in credit card debt: You use your card for a purchase you can't afford or want to defer payment, and then you make only the minimum payment that month. Soon, you are in the habit of using your card to purchase things beyond your budget.
In terms of savings accounts specifically, you'll likely find different estimates from different sources. The average American has $65,100 in savings — excluding retirement assets — according to Northwestern Mutual's 2023 Planning & Progress Study. That's a 5% increase over the $62,000 reported in 2022.
Debt fatigue occurs when a person becomes overwhelmed by the amount of debt they've accumulated and the seeming futility of ever getting it all paid back. Debt fatigue may result in a debtor giving up on their loan payments and overspending again, making the situation even worse.
1% of the balance plus interest: It would take 29.5 years or 354 months to pay off $10,000 in credit card debt making only minimum payments. You would pay a total of $19,332.21 in interest over that period.
