What do you do during a power outage in Arizona? ›

If you're affected by power outages lasting 12 hours or more, you may be eligible for a service standard payment. We administer the State Government's $120 extended outage payment, which is a one-off payment of $120 per any supply interruption that lasts longer than 12 consecutive hours.

A power outage is when the electrical power goes out unexpectedly. A power outage may: Disrupt communications, water and transportation. Close retail businesses, grocery stores, gas stations, ATMs, banks and other services.

Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. The refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if it is unopened. A full freezer will keep the temperature for approximately 48 hours (24 hours if it is half full) if the door remains closed.

If you've experienced a lightning strike or power surge that's damaged your electronics or appliances, you'll need to decide if you want to file a claim. If you decide you want to file a claim for the damages, you can call your insurance company or file a claim online.

One of the first things you should do during a power outage is unplug any appliances or electronics to avoid power surge damage once the power is restored. Sensitive devices should be on surge protectors to prevent damage if you can't unplug them in time.

First, check all of the outlets in the affected area to see if any have loose or damaged wires. If so, these need to be repaired or replaced as soon as possible. Use an Alternate Water Well Power Source

A small portable gas or diesel-powered generator can keep your pump working in the event of a power outage. However, be sure to choose one that's rated to provide the electricity your pump needs – otherwise, you could end up with damage to your well system equipment.

Flip the breakers for your HVAC system and other major appliances to the OFF position. Turn off the power strips or unplug the power cables for your other electronic devices. You do not need to turn off surge protectors or disconnect devices connected to surge protectors.
