Ms. Sonja Griffin was appointed Assistant Principal for Irondequoit High School at Thursday night’s Board of Education meeting. Her start date is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 22. Ms. Griffin is replacing Mrs. Barbara Battin, who is retiring. Mrs. Battin’s last day is scheduled for Jan. 31.

Sonja brings with her a wealth of experience that aligns with our West Irondequoit community values and initiatives,” IHS Principal Ms. Alecia Zipp-McLaughlin said. “Please join me in congratulating Ms. Griffin. Thank you also to all of the stakeholders, including parents/guardians, students and staff, who participated in our comprehensive interview process.”
A Rochester native and 1989 Irondequoit High School graduate, Ms. Griffin lives in Greece. She has worked in the Rochester City School District for 17 years. She has been a Lead Teacher since 2018, providing intensive instructional support for educators. Prior to that, she was a Special Education teacher in the RCSD for 12 years.
Ms. Griffin earned her Master’s degree at Roberts Wesleyan University in 2008 in Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities. She earned a Bachelor's degree from SUNY Brockport in 2000 in Human Services/Health Science Counseling. She owns certifications in Educational Leadership and Specialization in Autism, as well as School Building Leadership, Middle Childhood Education and Students with Disabilities.
