The charge time depends on the depth of discharge, condition and capacity of the battery. The Everstart Maxx 86 is about a 62 Amp hour battery, which, in perfect condition, would recharge fully from 50% depth of discharge in approximately 9-10 hours.

If your jump starter doesn't have LED lights, you can use a multimeter to check the voltage. A fully charged jump starter should have a voltage of around 12.6 volts. Once your jump starter is fully charged, disconnect the charger from the unit. Make sure to unplug the charger from the power source as well.

The best practice is to charge a jump starter after each use. Even in those cases where this type of charge frequency is unrealistic, nightly charging should be done if the unit is used often.

Replacing the Battery in a Portable Jump Starter

Once you have it, remove the cover of the portable jump started. Most models have screws that need to be removed to get to the battery, so a Philips head screw driver is needed. Note how the old battery is connected, disconnect it and connect the new battery.

Make sure that the jump starter is fully charged before use. Connect the cables: Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery and the black cable to a metal part of the car's frame away from the battery. Then, connect the other end of the cables to the jump starter.

A: Flashing red means bad battery, amber lightning bolt means that the battery is charging, plain solid red means your connections to the battery are loose.

Check the voltage

To check the voltage you'll need a voltmeter, which can be purchased cheaply from most major automotive parts stores. Check the voltage of your battery using the voltmeter to help determine your next course of action. 12.6V volts or above - Your battery is healthy and fully charged.
