According to the Bank of Russia's estimate, external debt of the Russian Federation as of March 31, 2024 totaled $304.0 billion, having decreased by $12.8 billion, or by 4.1%, since the end of 2023.
The highest level of the last years at 439 billion US Dollar was reached in 2022. Based on the number of inhabitants, this is a debt of 3,044 USD per person. For comparison, the average debt per person in the same year in the European Union was 32,826 USD.
The amounts of payments in default were enormous. Russian debt to Great Britain alone at the end of World War I was estimated at between 538 and 568 million pounds. The amount of debt to France was estimated at 3,573 million francs and Russian foreign debt to Japan equaled 147 million dollars.
