2024 Fall Show

About This Season:

Within the Sankofa Seasons (2021–2024), True Colors has focused on preserving and uplifting the belief of the Akan people of Ghana that the knowledge of the past must not be forgotten as time and journeys move forward. We enter the final year of this three part series with “Looking Forward” in 2024. As the final element of Sankofa message, True Colors focuses on the path forward. In response to recent trends in the American Theatre where Black playwrights are receiving infrequent premieres, Black theaters are being boxed out of productions of Black writers due to the increase in predominantly white organizations producing Black plays. True Colors has dedicated its final Sankofa Season to developing and premiering new work by Black writers. The Drinking Gourd, a cohort of 7 Black theaters, will develop new work by commissioned writers, including Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright James Ijames. Playwright and Atlanta native, Gabrielle Fulton-Ponder, will receive her first world premiere production,”In The Pocket” at True Colors. End our season will be the story of the Peerless Nicholas Brothers which will begin its commercial run in a world premiere production in Atlanta.

“For 20 years, True Colors featured a mix of classic and contemporary Black stories. As we enter our next era, we seek to establish our organization as the home of innovation and the creation of the next generation of new Black narratives. Atlanta has been the epicenter of invention in the arts – True Colors aligns itself with this history as it seeks to develop and world premiere new plays by Black artists and helps to create a new canon of Black theatrical work.”
