Parking in Los Angeles
Parking lots, garages and on-street parking prices vary. Remember – when parking on the street you must be within 18 inches of the curb to avoid a ticket.
Parking places in and around Los Angeles’ popular areas:
- Cinerama Dome (1400 Ivar Ave) is just around the corner from the Hollywood Walk of Fame with around 2,000 spaces.
- 530 S Spring St is a 24-hour parking garage a few blocks from Grand Central Market on the edge of Downtown.
- Lot 1 North (1550 Appian Way) – locally referred to as ‘the beach lot’ – is the prime parking spot for Santa Monica beach. The entrance is under the pier and has 1,200 spaces.
Roads and freeways
Main routes in Los Angeles
LA locals usually refer to freeways by their number, but radio traffic reports will normally use their full name. The main ones:
- Interstate 405 (I-405 – the San Diego Freeway) is one of the busiest in the country. It runs from the San Fernando Valley down through west LA towards Long Beach.
- Interstate 10 (I-10 – the Santa Monica/San Bernardino Freeway) connects Downtown and Santa Monica.
- Interstate 105 (I-105 – the Glen Anderson/Century Freeway) is a key route to LAX that runs further south and parallel to the I-10.
- US 101 (Hollywood/Ventura Freeway) is the longest highway in California that links LA to the Central Coast – key for reaching Hollywood.
Los Angeles to San Francisco
Take the I-5 north and drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco in just over six hours. Use the Pacific Coast Highway for a more scenic but longer route with stunning ocean views.

Use I-5 south to reach San Diego in about two and a half hours or longer depending on traffic.

Griffith Observatory
Offering some of the best views across the city – even before you use a telescope – Griffith Observatory is an impressive building overlooking LA. La Brea Tar Pits
